After-School & Summer Classes
After-school classes meet once a week, for a period of 6–12 weeks. Summer programs meet daily for one week. We are able to offer both in person and virtual options. Art of Protest (Grades 4–6; 6–9) Use your art to make a difference. Learn how artists can raise awareness, inspire change, and unite protest movements. Try your hand at multiple forms of art, such as posters, zines, and craftivism (wearable art). Create powerful works of protest art, and develop a strategy to get your message out into the world. Justice Squad for Grades 1–3 This class for children in grades 1–3 fosters a healthy, antiracist racial identity through age-appropriate explorations of race and racism. Children explore the concept of race through books and art, learn about anti-racist activists throughout history, and engage in activism projects, such as making protest art and writing letters. Justice Squad for Grades 3–5 Do you want to make the world more fair and just? Learn how you can make a difference in your community and beyond. We’ll use children’s literature, play, and the arts to explore important topics related to race, racism, and activism. We’ll then plan and undertake our own action project to address racism, such as making protest art, writing letters and petitions, or raising awareness in the community. Young Activists, Middle School Are you ready to fight for racial justice? Choose an issue that you care about, such as police brutality, the school-to-prison pipeline, or representation in the media. Working with a team, you will research the issue and then plan and carry out action. Actions could include making protest art, writing letters or petitions, raising awareness in the community, and much more. Don't see any times that work for your family? Know other families who might like to participate? If you can gather a group of 4 or more children, we may be able to arrange a new club for your group. Contact us for more information. |
Justice Squad is the highlight of my week! Justice Squad is a great opportunity to help us to better understand about the world, and people in the world, and ways that we can be a positive force. |
Family Programs
Reading for Joy Book Club (Parents & Children) Come share the joy of talking about good books as we discuss children’s literature by authors of color. In this group, children ages 8-12 and their parents gather to discuss middle grades books that center joy, rather than trauma. Carefully chosen to appeal to adults as well as children, recent book selections have included fantasy, adventure, realistic fiction, humor, and even a graphic novel. Each two-hour sessions includes:
Each session focuses on a different book. Try out one session, or come to them all! Contact us to learn more. |
Thank you hosting such a rich book discussion yesterday! We both felt energized afterwards and are looking forward to the next one!” |
Parent/Caregiver Programs
Raising Antiracist Kids This workshop series is for parents and other caregivers who want their children to be informed about race and committed to racial justice, but have limited experience talking about race with young people. We will unpack current thinking and research behind race-conscious parenting and explore examples and ideas for engaging children in learning about race and racism. Our small group learning community offers support and accountability to help participants take the next step in antiracist parenting. Participants are expected to try things out at home between sessions. Parent/Caregiver Coaching Do you believe that you should be talking with your child about racism, but worry about saying the wrong thing? Does it seem like the time is never quite right to start the conversation? Or have you had a few conversations about racism with your kid, but feel stuck about what to do next? We offer personalized coaching for parents and other caregivers who are seeking tools to help engage their children in conversations about race, racism, and racial privilege. Coaching sessions are tailored to a family’s needs. Contact us for more information. |
“I really enjoyed the small group and the supportive, curious tone of our discussions. “ We are having really good discussions in our family and appreciate your guidance and the questions so much. |
